True
to its form Poison Ivy is also difficult to kill.
You can manually remove them in the fall this takes
a bit of diligence. You must get every bit of the
plant--leaves, vines, and roots--or it will sprout
again. It is best to wear plastic gloves over cotton
gloves. If you wear just plastic the plastic can tear, and
if you just wear cotton
it will absorb the Urushiol and sink into your skin.
The
best way is to use a herbicide like
Roundup. You would do this in the fall, when
the plant is feeding its roots. Wear gloves
and protective clothing. Don't forget the dead
plant is still toxic up to 5 years. If
there are other plants around it will kill them too,
which is one of the drawbacks.
Never burn poison ivy. The smoke is extremely toxic. Do
not place the plant in a compose. You would
have to chop it up and expose yourself more to the
toxins. It is best to throw it out in the
trash right away.
Never
consider using a weed wacker to cut poison ivy.
You will spray
Urushiol all over your legs and in the air and you
will breath the toxins. Very dangerous.
